November, 1940. Tom Tyler, Detective Inspector of the small Shropshire town of Whitchurch, is a troubled man. The preceding summer had been a dark one for Britain, and even darker for Tom's own family and personal life. So he jumps at the opportunity to help out in the nearby city of Birmingham, where an explosion in a munitions factory has killed or badly injured several of the young women who have taken on dangerous work in support of the war effort.

At first, it seems more than likely the explosion was an accident, and Tom has only been called in because the forces are stretched thin. But as he talks to the employees of the factory, inner divisions - between the owner and his employees, between unionists and workers who fear communist infiltration - begin to appear. Put that together with an AWOL young soldier who unwittingly puts all those he loves at risk and a charming American documentary filmmaker who may be much more than he seems, and you have a pause-register novel that bears all the hallmarks of Maureen Jennings' extraordinary talent a multi-faceted mystery, vivid characters, snappy dialogue, and a pitch-perfect sense of the era of the Blitz, when the English were pushed to their limits and responded with a courage and resilience that still inspires.

I have read all three of this detective series. I find myself perplexed. The main character is interesting--a pseudo Foyle given the era of the plot-but the writing is very uneven. I read "Beware the Boy" last although it is #2. The beginning of the novel is almost leasurely with many characters and a couple of love angles and 3rd column sabotage but the pacing is weird. There is so much "investigation" that really goes no where and the ending of the book comes like a bat out of hell--as if the writer discovered she had to be done in 8 pages and wrapped the main story line up.
But there are several plot lines/character involvements that are just stopped--no resolution whatsoever...
Maybe that might happen in reality of a war zone, but it is highly UN-satisfying in a novel when the writer has supposedly the freedom to wrap up all story lines...
It is very frustrating to read a novel with such uneven plotting and character development. I chose these based on the WWII war at home connection and found many of the details and insights interesting. But the writing is so uneven---it is difficult to reconcile when this woman has written MANY novels.

Beware This Boy (Audible Audio Edition) Maureen Jennings Roger Clark Audible Studios Books Reviews

Very good.
haven't read yet-her ww2 stories are very good!!!
Great book from the creator of the Murdoch Mysteries (Artful Detective). This is one of her other detectives.
An interesting read...I was expecting to see a slightly different version of the Murdoch Mysteries...and enjoyed the story but felt that Tom Tyler wasn't much in evidence...and want to see more of him...so I will read more in the series.
Untamed was OK...typical Diana Palmer...I did enjoy the story line somewhat but at the start it was not quite what I was expecting...however all in all it was OK.
Tom Tyler is interesting, but his relationship with Clare is very annoying. Why do mystery writers feel the need to provide distraction by including male/female situations? Police procedural doesn't need anything else. Maureen Jennings writes well, but she falls in the same trap of needing something to extend the pages of the novel.
"Foyle's War" fans will like the detective and the backdrop. Accurate portrayal of life, events and people, during the bombings of Birmingham and everyday life working in the factories.
The story ( sabotage, murder, spies) will keep you paying attention to the storyline but the backdrop should intrigue young people not familiar with life at that time and will be nostalgic for older readers.
The portrayal of the Birmingham accent was not dead on but then one might need a lexicon and interpreter to attain that !!.
